Surf instructor Adam May, 21, teaches Lupita Salazar, 12, who is totally blind, how to surf, at Manhatten Beach on August 6, 2008. Salazar was one of thirteen blind or partially sighted children from the Braille Institute's Youth and Career Services Program in Los Angeles that were given free surf lessons by surf instructors with Kanoa Aquatics, a surf camp in Manhatten Beach.Mel Melcon / Los Angeles TimesKanoa Aquatics runs a free camp that teaches blind and visually impaired people to surf.  Recently, the Braille Instutute Youth and Career Services Program took thirteen kids there to do just that.  Two best friends were highlighted, Lupeta and Lorena blind since birth and nearly inseperable, showing the excitement of surfing and apprehension.  In the end, sitting on the beach, talking with your best friend became the real prize of the day.

She backed out of the water even as Lorena climbed up on a surfboard to give it a try. When the moment came to stand, Lorena made it up to her knees. Then she fell back into the water.
