  • Mission Statement

We help the Lakota of Pine Ridge Reservation in SD. Working with the Lakota Families, we need computers to help provide a culturally and academically rich life for their youth.

  • Project Abstract

The Allen Community Center’s Computer Project adds computer literacy to the ongoing youth development activities offered by the center. Today, computer and inter-connectivity skills are increasingly vital. Our project provides access to digital tools for those unable to explore them except for limited classroom time. The project’s structured learning improves computer literacy; develops skills in safe internet use; and builds competence in using specific applications such as Microsoft’s Office Suite.

This training and guidance may be taught on-site by Lakota talent from the Oglala Lakota College; or by off-site expertise via remote conferencing tools. Computer classes at the center may also offer part-time employment to Oglala Lakota College students. Our project also gives Lakota youth the opportunity for less structured, but supervised computer and internet access time. This enables them to explore age-appropriate internet sites, and to develop email and messaging skills in off-reservation communities.

  • Target Population

The target population for the Allen Community Center Computer Project is the Lakota living in and near the village of Allen SD, particularly the children. Nearly 100% of this population lives below the poverty line, with neither home computers nor other external communication opportunities. The 50-75 youth participating in the center’s activities (as of Fall 2019) range in age from 4 to 16. With computer access we expect that number to increase, particularly in the 14-18 age range. Additionally there will be internet access available for the adult population to further develop computer skills, internet communities and employability as time, interest and skill allow.
