Children with autism as well as a variety of other neurologically based disorders have made tremendous gains through the use of specialized software designed to run on a standard computer. Portable devices can be used as a communication system, enabling the children to better express themselves. Consider donating your laptops and tablets.
Mission Statement
In 1992, the American Institute for Neuro-Integrative Development (AIND), was formed as a 501(c)(3) Connecticut not-for-profit corporation to develop Giant Steps CT School, and to support other education, medical research, and advocacy efforts to enhance the lives of individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), developmental disabilities, and related neurological impairments.
Giant Steps CT is a Connecticut State-approved private school for students diagnosed with ASD and/or other neurological impairments, ages 3-21 years. We provide our students with a uniquely comprehensive program to meet their individual educational and therapeutic needs, while supporting meaningful inclusion and participation in their home school district and community.
Project Abstract
The current project involves technological upgrades in the form of computers, hardware, and software. We are constantly seeking to upgrade existing hardware in order to keep up with the more demanding computing requirements of new technologies. Donated computers would be utilized in order to maintain consistency, increase reliability, increase productivity and efficiency, and to have the ability to provide the students and staff with essential technological tools necessary for the students to gain the skills needed to function in society. This technology would aid the staff in using the most current and advanced methods involving the educational and therapeutic activities of enrolled students.
Target Population
The parties that will benefit from the proposed project include students, their respective school districts, faculty, and administrative personnel as well as parents and families of children not currently enrolled. Students' ages range from 3 years to 21 years while staff ages range from 20 years and on. Giant Steps is licensed by the Connecticut State Department of Special Education to accommodate 40 students while the faculty to student ratio is 2:1. While roughly 120 students and staff will greatly benefit from the grant, countless others may also benefit through the Inclusion program and the informal outreach program. Enrolled students are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders, related neurological disorders, and other developmental disorders.
